Meta’s well-received Quest 3 will be too colorful for a real mix.

Meta Reality is Meta’s name for the real-world color technology introduced in the Quest Pro. On the headset, it uses two front-facing black & white cameras to create a 3D point cloud, then repeats the camera view to match the depth of this cloud. Meta announced in October that Quest 3 will launch at the end of 2023. Zuckerberg said it will be “in the amount of $300, $400, or $500, that area”.
The inclusion of pass-through colors could see the Quest 3 market as much as a mix of realism, such as the Quest Pro – albeit at a much lower price.
September, clear schematics of Quest 3 was leaked to YouTuber SadlyItsBradley (Brad Lynch). Unlike the Quest Pro, the headset is described as having no eye or face tracking. It did, however, include a pancake Lenses that help the headphones to achieve a design than the Quest 2, and the depth sensor for the combination to make sure. It’s possible though that Meta has several competing models for Quest 3, and the headset seen in that leak is just one of them.
Quest 3’s biggest improvement isn’t something you’ll see in the schematics though. Now the main line of headphones – including Quest 2 and Pico 4 – uses the original XR2, retroactively labeled Gen 1 by Qualcomm. The XR2 Gen 1 is a variant of the Snapdragon 865 smartphone chip that first shipped in early 2020.
Meta & Qualcomm announced a partnership several years ago to produce the next-generation Snapdragon XR chipsets, too sources at Lynch told him that the Quest 3 will use the still unannounced Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2.
Import engine report XR2 Gen 2 is based Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 released late last year. 8 Gen 2’s GPU provides 30% improved performance-per-watt and 150% improved peak performance compared to XR2 Gen 1’s. This will lead to more reliable graphics at a higher resolution – and maybe even a whole new game that just couldn’t be done on Quest 2.
